The Space Development Agency expects a plane of Northrop Grumman satellites to reach orbit within weeks, launching the first block of the Pentagon’s operational military data network in low-Earth orbit.
Agency director Gurpartap “GP” Sandhoo told the Small Satellite Conference in Salt Lake City on Aug. 24 that the first Northrop plane could fly “in the next couple of weeks.” The milestone ends a months-long pause in the Tranche 1 Transport Layer, the communications backbone of the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture.
Tranche 1 holds two planes of York Space Systems satellites and one Lockheed Martin plane. Sandhoo credited lessons from the first York batch for sharp gains on the second, with tasks completed two to three times faster on average.
Scaling remains the hard part. Sandhoo said building whole constellations strains supply chains and assembly and test campaigns in ways single satellites never do. Recent Space Force restructuring also splits his portfolio: he keeps oversight of Tranches 1 and 2 plus future missile-warning tranches in low, medium, highly elliptical and geosynchronous orbits, while the Transport Layer moves to another acquisition executive.
The transition is forcing SDA to grow, with the organization roughly quadrupling in size. Sandhoo framed the tension at the heart of the mission: satellites designed for five-year lives, versus missile warning and tracking treated as a no-fail capability that demands hardened, long-lived hardware.
Sandhoo also briefed the threats driving the architecture, from hypersonic weapons and cruise missiles to fractional orbital bombardment systems.
