Space Force confirms a Cold War spy satellite broke apart in orbit

Debris from USA 32, an NRO signals intelligence satellite launched on a Titan II, is now part of routine conjunction screening with no cause announced.

Debris from a defunct American spy satellite has joined the catalog that space operators must dodge, after the Space Force confirmed the spacecraft came apart in orbit.

The object, tracked as USA 32 and logged as catalog number 19460, went silent decades ago. It flew as part of an electronic and signals intelligence program that the National Reconnaissance Office ran under the name FARRAH, and it reached orbit on a Titan II roughly 40 years back.

Space Forces-Space said the breakup happened around Sept. 13. A notice from the service’s KeepTrack Operations Center logged the incident as an announced breakup rather than a suspected fragmentation, and public orbital records showed a velocity change of about 0.30 meters per second at the time.

The command said all tracked debris is being worked into conjunction assessment screenings to support spaceflight safety, and that no immediate threats have been identified while analysis continues. No cause has been made public.

Dormant intelligence satellites are not supposed to come apart on their own. Aging batteries, leftover propellant and decades of accumulated stress can each end a dead spacecraft, and the resulting cloud matters most where thousands of active satellites share the same altitudes. Every new object joins a catalog that operators must fly around, burning propellant and attention across fleets that were never built for this much traffic.
