Army’s new space superiority shop eyes ground strikes on spy satellites

The Army's new space superiority directorate wants ground weapons that can directly engage adversary spy satellites.

The Army is moving beyond signal jamming to build a real counterspace toolkit, with a new directorate tasked to strike adversary sensing satellites from the ground.

Col. Joe Mroszczyk, who took over the Transformation Integration Directorate for Space Superiority in July, told Breaking Defense that the service wants hardware able to directly engage satellites used to track and target US forces. The office sits inside Army Space and Missile Defense Command and feeds requirements into the service’s program executive office for counter command and control.

Mroszczyk argued that striking an enemy spacecraft is no stranger for the land force than firing at a ship at sea, framing counterspace as a natural extension of its core competencies.

Two areas lead the work: counter-surveillance and reconnaissance aimed at adversary space-based sensors, and stratospheric warfare in the high atmosphere. Army officials declined to name the weapons under study but stressed the service will follow national space policy that bars destructive kinetic anti-satellite attacks littering orbit with long-lived debris.

The push marks a formal turn for a land force that previously framed its space role mainly as electronic warfare against satellite communications. Counterspace appeared among Army budget priorities for the first time in fiscal 2027, and the service finalized its Space Operations Branch in June.

Mroszczyk described the directorate as a bridge between operators and acquirers, ensuring operational requirements survive the transition into development programs as the Army expands its contribution to US Space Command’s space superiority mission.
