The Pentagon’s Golden Dome missile defense program is becoming a focal point for space and defense startups — but cybersecurity experts are raising alarms about the vast attack surface that a constellation of hundreds or thousands of military satellites would present.
Suddenly, Space Defense Is a Growth Industry
The prospect of deploying hundreds or even thousands of satellites for missile warning, tracking, communications, and interception missions has prompted companies to search for opportunities beyond the spacecraft themselves. Star Catcher Industries, a startup developing orbital power-beaming technology, envisions a network of power-generation spacecraft in low Earth orbit that would collect solar energy and beam it to other satellites using near-infrared lasers. Pulse Space recently won a $40 million Space Force contract for similar laser power transmission technology.
Companies developing satellite refueling, orbital transportation, communications relay networks, and in-space servicing are positioning their technologies as essential support services for a large space-based defense network. The bet: if the Pentagon builds a persistent orbital architecture, it will need the same kinds of logistics, communications, and maintenance infrastructure that support complex operations on Earth.
Why the Cyber Side Keeps Executives Awake at Night
However, each new satellite, ground station, and inter-satellite link in the Golden Dome architecture represents a potential entry point for adversaries. Space cybersecurity researchers point to several critical vulnerabilities:
- Laser communication links — While generally more secure than RF, optical crosslinks require sophisticated encryption and authentication to prevent intercept or injection attacks
- Power-beaming systems — Directed energy transmission between spacecraft introduces new vectors for jamming, redirection, or weaponization
- Orbital servicing interfaces — Refueling ports and docking mechanisms could be exploited by hostile spacecraft posing as service vehicles
- Software-defined payloads — Reprogrammable satellites offer flexibility but create risk of remote compromise and re-tasking
- Supply chain vulnerabilities — Thousands of satellites from multiple manufacturers create a complex, distributed supply chain with numerous points of potential compromise
Old Threats in a New Domain
The Golden Dome program is designed to counter missile threats from adversaries including Iran and North Korea, but the same orbital infrastructure that makes missile defense possible also creates a high-value target set. Adversaries have demonstrated ASAT weapons, advanced jamming capabilities, and increasing sophistication in cyber operations against satellite ground systems.
“The more complex and interconnected the space architecture becomes, the more opportunities there are for a sophisticated adversary,” said one defense analyst. “Every crosslink, every ground station, every software-updatable component is a potential vulnerability that needs to be designed with security from the ground up.”
Baking In Security Before the First Satellite Launches
For companies seeking Golden Dome contracts, cybersecurity is becoming a non-negotiable requirement. The Space Force’s new acquisition structure — particularly the Electromagnetic Warfare and Cyber portfolio — will hold vendors accountable for building security into satellite systems from design through operations.
As Golden Dome moves from concept to procurement, the space security community will be watching closely to see whether the Pentagon embeds cybersecurity requirements into contract specifications from the outset — or whether security remains an afterthought in the rush to field capability.
