GPS interference along Poland’s Baltic coast hit on most days this summer, with hours-long outages across all navigation bands, according to Poland’s Communications Institute.
The institute’s monitoring station in Gdansk recorded significant disruptions affecting all GNSS bands on 70% of days in May and June. Partial interference affected 48% of days this year, and complete outages were logged on 6% of days. The station has detected navigation anomalies since January 2024, but the situation worsened sharply in 2026.
The institute links the interference to electronic warfare in the Baltic Sea region and expects disruptions to persist while military jamming operations continue. Experts from Gdansk University of Technology, the Maritime University of Gdynia and the institute have pointed to Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave as a major source of jamming and spoofing. Reports of spoofing systems capable of falsifying signals over distances up to 450 kilometers have risen from a handful in early 2025 to dozens.
Researcher Roman Mlodkowski said the phenomenon takes the form of hours-long outages across all GNSS bands as well as partial disruptions in a single band. The institute urged people in the Gdansk-Gdynia-Sopot metro area not to rely solely on phone navigation and told drone operators to avoid flights, warning that a sudden loss of positioning could mean loss of control.
GNSS underpins positioning for smartphones, vehicles, aircraft, ships and drones, so the outages ripple across civilian life on NATO’s eastern flank. The findings echo a wider pattern of Baltic interference that has grown since early 2025.
