Quantum computers could forge the history held in satellite logs

Satellite telemetry logs face a post-quantum deadline before the signatures protecting them expire.

Satellite operations are relentless logging exercises. Thruster firings, conjunction warnings, proximity operations, and anti-satellite tests all produce telemetry that is logged in exacting detail. An essay in The Space Review argues those logs will become critical geopolitical evidence decades from now, and that the cryptography protecting them is set to expire before the records do.

A dispute in 2037 over whether a commercial satellite deliberately interfered with a military asset would be settled using historical data captured now. The authenticity of that record rests on cryptographic signatures, and here the foundation cracks. The cryptographic locks protecting space records lean mostly on classical schemes such as the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA), whose useful life is strictly bounded.

The clock on classical signatures is explicit. NIST’s transition roadmap, NIST IR 8547, deprecates algorithms like ECDSA by 2030 and disallows them entirely by 2035, two years after the agency issued its first post-quantum standards in August 2024. New satellites can be pointed at new algorithms, but that covers only part of the problem. What stays unresolved is the fate of historical records signed under the old schemes.

The familiar worry is “harvest now, decrypt later,” where adversaries capture encrypted communications today and decode them once quantum computing matures. The essay adds a threat aimed at the records: signed data broadcast or intercepted now could be stockpiled, then re-forged after the underlying signature scheme breaks, so the telemetry of a 2026 orbital maneuver could be presented in 2032 as proof a different action occurred.

The essay argues the threat is not science fiction and that space governance needs to treat audit trails as first-class infrastructure, with transition planning for existing records rather than only for new satellites.
