Schiess wins Senate backing to take Space Force helm

The Senate confirmed Lt. Gen. Douglas Schiess as the Space Force's third chief of space operations.

After months of hearings and a high-stakes budget fight, the Space Force finally has a permanent leader. The Senate confirmed Lt. Gen. Douglas Schiess on Aug. 6 as the service’s third chief of space operations, succeeding Gen. Chance Saltzman on the Joint Chiefs.

Schiess inherits a force midway through a growth spurt. He told lawmakers the service had finished its institution-building phase and now must expand its workforce, infrastructure and operational muscle to keep pace with China, which he called a “breathtakingly fast” developer of military space capability.

His confirmation lands as the Pentagon pushes bigger constellations of missile-warning, tracking and communications satellites, plus a reorganization of acquisition around portfolio executives. He backed that direction but insisted combat-capable spacecraft stay in government hands, even as the service leans on commercial links, tracking and other bought services.

The 34-year veteran began as an Air Force missile officer and has commanded the 45th Space Wing at Cape Canaveral, the missile-warning 21st Space Wing and U.S. Space Forces-Space. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink said Schiess would accelerate delivery of next-generation space capability, and Saltzman called him “an exceptional leader” as the outgoing chief retires after 35 years in uniform.

The vote caps a leadership transition watched across the industry, with contractors now awaiting Schiess’s priorities on procurement reform, commercial leverage and the classified programs that dominate the service’s $39.9B budget request.
