The European Space Agency launched CyberCUBE on July 7 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 Transporter-17 mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base. The satellite settled into a sun-synchronous orbit at roughly 500 kilometers.
The 3U CubeSat carries a software-defined radio paired with a reprogrammable FPGA processing core, allowing engineers to alter the spacecraft’s security posture in flight. Built by Galicia-based Alen Space and integrated by GMV’s Romanian division, it marks the first ESA mission led entirely by a Romania-based company.
The experiment list reads like a catalog of documented spacecraft attack vectors: detecting unauthorized command-and-control injection aimed at attitude control or propulsion, identifying and mitigating GPS jamming and spoofing, and monitoring onboard systems for anomalous behavior.
Post-quantum cryptography trials carry particular weight. Satellites launched today are designed to operate a decade or longer, and data encrypted at launch could be intercepted and stored for decryption once quantum computers mature. Validating PQC algorithms against actual downlink conditions gives ESA hard data on latency and power overhead before baking these algorithms into future missions.
The satellite operates under ESA’s Cybersecurity Operations Center as part of the agency’s Cyber Security Resilience program, with operations handed to ESA’s European Space Safety and Education Centre in Redu, Belgium.
