SDA resumes satellite launches after nine-month pause

The Space Development Agency resumed Tranche 1 satellite launches after resolving software and hardware issues that delayed the constellation deployment.

The Space Development Agency has resumed satellite launches after a nine-month pause, successfully deploying the second plane of York Space Systems’ Transport Layer Tranche 1 satellites. The launch, which took place aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral, marks a critical milestone for the agency’s ambitious low-Earth orbit constellation.

The SDA’s Transport Layer is designed to provide global military communications with low-latency data links, forming part of the broader Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture. Tranche 1 consists of approximately 126 satellites across multiple orbital planes, with York Space Systems serving as one of the prime contractors for the transport layer.

The nine-month hiatus followed earlier manufacturing and integration challenges that delayed the constellation’s buildup. The SDA had been working closely with its vendors to resolve production bottlenecks and ensure satellite readiness before resuming launch operations.

This launch comes as the SDA and the Space Force’s Space Systems Command continue to align their acquisition approaches. In recent months, the Space Force has moved to bring the SDA’s acquisition authorities under a more unified structure, though the agency maintains its rapid-procurement model that relies on fixed-price contracts and two-year technology refresh cycles.

The second plane of Transport Layer satellites will expand coverage and improve the network’s resilience. When fully deployed, the Tranche 1 constellation will provide beyond-line-of-sight connectivity for military platforms including fighters, ships, and ground vehicles.

SDA Director Derek Tournear has emphasized that the agency is committed to the two-year tranche refresh model, with Tranche 2 already in development. The agency’s ability to resume launches demonstrates progress in addressing the industrial base challenges that have affected the broader space sector.
