International air and space leaders are pushing for allied unity following the NATO summit, with a particular emphasis on integrating space capabilities into collective defense frameworks. The push comes as defense chiefs from allied nations met in London for the Global Air and Space Chiefs’ Conference.

The conference, which convened senior military leaders from dozens of nations, focused on the growing importance of space as a warfighting domain and the need for interoperability among allied space forces. Multiple chiefs emphasized that space operations can no longer be treated as a niche capability separate from traditional air and ground operations.

NATO formally declared space an operational domain in 2019, and the alliance has been working since then to integrate national space capabilities into its command structure. The summit earlier this month reinforced this commitment, with allied leaders agreeing to deepen cooperation on space situational awareness and satellite communications.

Key discussion points at the conference included the need for common data standards to enable information sharing, joint training exercises that incorporate space effects, and mechanisms for allied nations to contribute space capabilities to collective operations. Several European allies announced plans to increase investment in national space capabilities that can be made available to NATO.

The push for unity follows the successful launch of the HALO satellite constellation initiative, where eight NATO allies agreed to link their military satellites into a mega-constellation. That project serves as a model for broader space integration.

The United States, which maintains the largest military space capabilities among NATO allies, has emphasized the importance of allied contributions. U.S. Space Force leaders have argued that space superiority requires a coalition approach, as no single nation can cover all the necessary capabilities alone.
