Beijing has moved a pair of classified satellites into an orbit its TJS series has never used, signaling a broader electronic surveillance role for China’s military space fleet.
The mission began with a Long March 6A lifting off from Taiyuan at 9 p.m. Eastern on July 29. State contractor CASC announced the flight went well and revealed the cargo as TJS-27A and TJS-27B, billing both as communication technology test satellites. Space Force orbital tracking later placed the duo around 1,155 kilometers up at 63.4 degrees, a profile that analyst Jonathan McDowell links to time-delay-of-arrival electronic intelligence craft like the US Navy’s classified NOSS constellation.
Earlier missions in this orbital regime flew under Yaogan cover names, so TJS-27 marks a first for the series in signal hunting. The TJS line has spent most of its history in geosynchronous and Molniya orbits, and one earlier spacecraft deployed a subsatellite that drew close to US satellites.
Analysts in the West see the series as supporting signals intelligence, early warning and satellite inspection for the People’s Liberation Army. Whether the two new spacecraft operate as a duo or seed a wider formation is unclear, given that similar US and Chinese clusters usually launch in threes.
Hours before, a Long March 7A from Wenchang put up Tianlian-3 (01), the opening satellite of China’s third-generation relay line. Riding the DFH-4E bus, it expands parallel data relay for crewed missions and the Tiangong station, a role analogous to NASA’s Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System.
China has now flown 53 missions in 2026 across the two launches, putting a first-ever 100-flight year within reach.
