Quantum-proof encryption rides onto Qatar’s working satellite network

A live Es'hail-1 network in Qatar now runs post-quantum encryption, proving operators can harden satellite links without downtime.

Satellite operators facing the threat of quantum decryption often assume they must rebuild hardware to survive it. A demonstration in Qatar suggests a softer path: layering new encryption onto a live network without stopping service.

Es’hailSat, Qatar’s national operator, ran the trial with Arqit, a UK-based encryption firm, and AIEE, a regional systems integrator. The companies announced results on September 1 after testing on Es’hail-1 at the 25.5/26 degrees East orbital position, with the work centered on the operator’s Tier-4 certified teleport in Doha.

The setup used Arqit’s NetworkSecure and symmetric key agreement platform as a software layer on existing infrastructure. That layer generates keys built to resist future quantum computers, protecting data in transit while live systems, services, and performance carried on unchanged. The approach counters harvest-now-decrypt-later campaigns, in which adversaries stockpile encrypted traffic until they can break it, and matters most for government, maritime, energy, and enterprise users whose links stay up for decades.

For Es’hailSat chief executive Ali Al Kuwari, the exercise protects links his country depends on, including the backbone of Qatar’s digital push across the Middle East and North Africa. Arqit’s Andy Leaver argued the demonstration shows operators can answer the quantum threat without accepting downtime for a rebuild. AIEE, which ran the integration and interoperability checks across ground and network systems, expects the same recipe to transfer to other satellite operators in the region.
