Royal Air Force promotes space to a top-tier command role

Britain's Royal Air Force renames its headquarters Air & Space Command, giving the space domain parity with air power.

The Royal Air Force has folded space into the identity of its main headquarters, renaming Air Command as Air & Space Command and taking formal lead of the space mission for all of UK defense. Announced this week, the change gives the domain a more visible place in Britain’s senior command structure, where it will now be planned and delivered at the same level as air power.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth, the Chief of the Air Staff, heads the renamed organization at RAF High Wycombe. Its portfolio stays intact: UK Space Command continues to report through the headquarters, alongside the RAF groups responsible for flying operations and training.

Smyth framed the redesignation as a response to strategic reality. Space underpins defense and modern life, he said, but it has also become a zone of intensifying competition, and air control now depends on freedom of action in and through space. With that dependence, space power can no longer be treated as a secondary concern, he argued, and belongs at the highest levels of military leadership.

The move caps a command lineage with deep space roots. The RAF opened the missile early-warning radar at Fylingdales in 1963 and orbited Britain’s first military communications satellite, Skynet 1A, in 1969. UK Space Command has sat inside the air force structure since 2021, and the new title makes the RAF’s formal ownership of the space mission explicit as Britain shifts toward joint air-and-space warfighting.
