Mobile SCIF fleet opens classified space work to small suppliers

Fifty mobile secure rooms will let small satellite firms take classified work without building SCIFs of their own.

Building a secure room for classified work takes millions of dollars and years of accreditation, and that barrier keeps many small space suppliers out of secret Pentagon programs.

The Pentagon’s Secure Space Network aims to remove the hurdle. Fifty mobile SCIFs, the guarded facilities where sensitive information may be handled, will be stationed at military installations, industry support centers, and other sites tied to defense work.

The Office of Industrial Base Growth leads the effort alongside the Space Development Agency and the Office of Small Business Programs. The space agency’s seat at the table signals who stands to benefit: satellite builders and component makers whose technology matters to national security but who cannot finance permanent classified facilities.

Industry has long called that classified-access hurdle a reason capable vendors never reach secret programs. James Mismash, who directs the Office of Small Business Programs, said in a statement that the network “directly addresses” the problem and should widen competition across the supplier base.

The design pairs rapidly deployable units with fixed facilities for longer-term needs. Officials also want a repeatable production process so extra secure workspaces can be manufactured and shipped out as demand grows, a surge-capable pathway for an industrial base the department is trying to expand.

The push arrives as the Pentagon funds satellite factories to scale output for planned constellations. Access to classified environments is the next bottleneck in that chain, the step between a promising design and a program it can actually serve.
