Offensive space weapons top Space Command’s new needs list

Space Command's five-year requirements list puts offensive space weapons and counter-constellation work at the top.

A five-year requirements list from U.S. Space Command puts shooting in space and breaking up enemy constellations at the very front of its wish list.

Gen. Stephen Whiting released the Integrated Priorities List on Aug. 12 during the Space and Missile Defense Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama, then walked reporters through it at Redstone Arsenal. The document is meant to steer military services, government labs, researchers and industry toward capability gaps the command sees as underfunded or unsolved.

The command’s highest ask is “integrated space fires,” its term for kinetic and non-kinetic weapons that can strike in orbit. Number two is “counter-pLEO,” shorthand for defeating proliferated low Earth orbit constellations. Whiting pressed industry specifically to find ways to disable large spy satellite constellations.

Behind those two sit joint space command and control, space domain awareness built for combat engagements, and the ability to maneuver in orbit for extended periods.

Whiting called the list a clear demand signal rather than a wish list. A combatant command that fights to win wars needs credible, acknowledged fires, he said, and the priorities reflect emerging threats, planned Pentagon investment and maturing technology.

The document lands amid the Pentagon’s Golden Dome missile-defense buildup and China’s expanding orbital presence, and it dovetails with Space Command’s Apollo Maneuvers drive toward maneuver warfare doctrine.
