Space Command’s next commander is a career space operator

The White House has tapped Lt. Gen. David N. Miller Jr. to run U.S. Space Command as the Pentagon pushes deeper into offensive space operations.

Lt. Gen. David N. Miller Jr. is set to take over U.S. Space Command, the White House announced, putting a career space operator in charge of a combatant command that is leaning harder into fighting in orbit.

The nomination followed a quiet procedural step. Miller’s promotion notice landed in the Congressional Record on Sept. 29 but named no posting; confirmation that he is headed to SPACECOM came from both Space Command and the Space Force a day later. He would succeed Gen. The opening comes from Stephen Whiting’s own expected retirement by January 2027.

Miller’s resume is built inside the domain. He currently serves as deputy chief of space operations for strategy, plans, programs and requirements, the post that shapes how the service plans its forces. From 2024 into 2025 he commanded the organization that is now Space Operations Command, then called Combat Forces Command. Earlier stints covered operations, training and force development at Space Command, and the Space Control Division at Air Force headquarters.

Chief of Space Operations Gen. Douglas Schiess called Miller an exceptional Guardian and a strong candidate for a critical joint leadership role. The job has grown harder since Congress reestablished the command in 2019: Miller would be its fourth commander and the third from the Space Force, arriving as the Pentagon pushes deeper into offensive space operations. Pentagon officials describe a direct role for space assets and SPACECOM forces in the strikes on Iran. The support ranged from communications and navigation to missile warning and electronic warfare.

Charles Galbreath of the Mitchell Institute’s Spacepower Advantage Center said the bond between the service and the combatant command is undeniable and predicted it would keep maturing under Schiess and Miller.
