A regional jet flew more than four hours over the open Pacific with GPS switched off, riding Earth’s magnetic field to stay on course in what backers call a turning point for jam-proof navigation.
The Defense Innovation Unit ran the test aboard an Embraer 170 between Seattle’s Puget Sound and southern Alaska. Quantum magnetometers from Honeywell Aerospace read tiny variations in the planet’s magnetic field and matched them against a reference map, cutting position error by 89 percent versus the radar and visual backups aircrews normally fall back on. Navigation data reached the pilots in real time on standard tablets, with no cockpit overhaul.
MagNav traces back to spring 2024, when DIU opened its Transition of Quantum Sensing effort to industry. Seventy-two companies pitched for the work; Honeywell Aerospace came away with the prototype contract. Kyle Norman, deputy director of DIU’s Kill Web portfolio, said the flight shows quantum navigation tools can reach working hardware quickly instead of lingering in a lab.
Magnetic signatures cannot be spoofed or blocked the way radio signals can, which is the point. Jammers now routinely blind GPS over conflict zones and parts of Europe, and militaries want a fallback that does not depend on a satellite signal arriving intact.
Honeywell and DIU plan to fly the system again on a military C-17 transport before the year is out, edging magnetic navigation toward the cockpits that would need it most if satellite signals vanish.
