Fourteen Russian satellites swept over a Saudi base before Iran’s attack

A CNN investigation built on Kayhan Space tracking found Russian reconnaissance satellites passing over Prince Sultan Air Base two days before Iranian strikes.

A CNN investigation has traced a string of Russian reconnaissance satellites across a Saudi air base in the days before an Iranian missile attack, adding a space dimension to the strikes on U.S. forces in the Middle East.

Working with analysts from Project Aurora and Kayhan Space, CNN counted 14 Russian spacecraft on passes over Prince Sultan Air Base near Riyadh two days ahead of the attack. One of them, Kosmos-2573, returned detailed imagery of the facility. The reporting credits eight of the satellites with possible radar-signal interception, two with thermal sensing and three with radar imaging.

Imagery as a targeting input

The value of that data lies in the correction loop. Optical and radar coverage lets planners fix coordinates and then judge damage after a strike, work Iran previously had to do with ground observation and far less precise reconnaissance.

Russia’s civil and military remote-sensing fleets orbit low, where radar payloads see through cloud and darkness. That makes imaging satellites a dual-use problem for defenders, who cannot easily tell an agricultural or mapping customer from a military one.

The disclosure lands days after reporting that Chinese commercial imagery also fed Iranian targeting against U.S. positions, a finding Washington has used to press Beijing.

Western commands are answering by watching tasking rather than hardware: tracking which foreign satellites pass over which bases, then adjusting camouflage, dispersal and air defenses when the pattern repeats.
