An antenna maker clears the bar every defense satcom supplier now faces

AvL Technologies' Final CMMC Level 2 sign-off shows how supply-chain certification has become a bidding requirement for satellite ground hardware.

AvL Technologies said October 28 that an accredited third-party assessor had signed off its Final CMMC Level 2 certification, a milestone that increasingly decides which suppliers can keep bidding on Pentagon satellite ground hardware.

The Asheville, North Carolina company builds the mobile terminals and automated pointing systems troops use to close links to military satellites in the field. About 80 percent of its product line serves defense and government users across X-band, military Ka-band and commercial constellations.

What the certification proves

Level 2 requires a contractor to implement all 110 security requirements in NIST Special Publication 800-171, which govern how controlled unclassified information is stored and moved across corporate networks. A Final designation means an independent assessor found no open deficiencies or conditional exemptions when the review closed.

That matters more for antenna builders than it might appear. Tactical terminals carry link budgets, frequency plans and cryptographic interface documentation that adversaries prize, and a manufacturer that cannot protect its engineering files is a path into the networks those terminals join.

AvL built a segregated environment around its design, prototyping and assembly workflows so sensitive data never sits beside ordinary business systems. Chief executive David Bowne said the assessment gives customers independent confirmation of controls they previously had to take on trust.

A gate that is closing

The Defense Department is phasing CMMC requirements into contracts, so firms without a Final designation risk exclusion from solicitations that carry the clauses.

AvL is not waiting on US demand alone. It recently won a $31M contract to supply WGS-certified terminals to the Polish Armed Forces with local partner GISS.

The certification is a pass, not an advantage. Its value is removing a disqualification while allied ground segment spending rises.
