The Army gives 600 soldiers a permanent home in space operations

More than 600 troops have reclassified into the Army's new Space Operations Branch, its first permanent enlisted cadre for the space domain.

Satellites now shape how American ground troops move, talk and shoot. Until this month, most of the soldiers who kept those links running did the job on borrowed time, rotating in from other branches and then leaving again. The Army has now carved out a permanent place for them.

Roughly 600 troops took on the title of 40D Tactical Space Operations Specialist, the enlisted backbone of a newly stood-up Space Operations Branch. Army Space and Missile Defense Command announced the move, which drew almost 3,000 applicants.

Their remit ranges across satellite links, the fight over navigation signals, counter-sensing and high-altitude work the service groups under stratospheric warfare. The aim is to keep commanders functioning when jamming or outages deny them access to orbit-based tools.

Lt. Gen. John Rafferty, the command’s leader, framed the shift around scale, saying the Army is the joint force’s heaviest user of space and needs the domain woven through every level of operations.

Recruits for the opening cohort arrived from signal, air defense artillery and military intelligence units. Turning the specialty into a career rather than a rotating assignment is meant to stop the drain of trained operators. The service projects the field will reach about 1,500 soldiers by 2032.
