Hughes wins task order for automatic multi-orbit failover

A $42.5M Space Systems Command task order tasks Hughes with software that reroutes military satellite traffic between orbits when a link is jammed.

Space Systems Command has committed money to the proposition that a jammed link need not silence a commander. Hughes Network Systems can now count on $42.5 million from the command, awarded Oct. 29 for automation software that governs traffic across military satellite networks.

Under the deal, Pentagon and commercial constellations are handled as a shared pool of capacity. A routing engine shifts flows among geostationary, medium Earth orbit and low Earth orbit assets, choosing whichever route currently works.

Failover without a human in the loop

Hughes puts its Terminal Management Agent on user terminals already fielded and on enterprise ground nodes. From there it tracks interference, climbing latency and fading throughput, and switches paths once a link degrades or gets cut.

The payoff for troops is a backup route on existing software-defined radios, with no crew cranking a dish around or keying in a fresh satellite request by hand. Nodes at the ground segment continuously sample connection quality and rank candidates by mission priorities set in advance.

Connection to the Pentagon’s Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control framework is built in.

Why a network layer counts as a defense contract

Today’s order promotes Hughes out of plain enterprise routing into coordinating the Wideband Global SATCOM fleet next to commercial LEO and GEO capacity. It tracks the Commercial Satellite Communications Office’s drive to weave private bandwidth into military designs.

That role has been in the works since 2021, when the Air Force named the company a prime under the Advanced Battle Management System vehicle and it deployed the terminal agent to knit transports together.

The award arrives as jamming of satellite uplinks turns ordinary. Hopping between paths in software costs less than hardening a constellation against interference at the start.
