The Space Force has selected Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory to serve as technical direction agent for its Space-Based Interceptor program, the service announced July 31. The lab will act as an independent, conflict-free advisor keeping system architecture consistent across industry partners.
The program, part of the Golden Dome for America missile defense initiative, is building a proliferated low Earth orbit constellation of interceptors able to engage targets during boost, midcourse and glide phases. Officials say it will advance homeland defense, strengthen deterrence and keep US space operations resilient, responsive and informed.
The acquisition follows a prize-based model in which commercial companies invest early and compete for additional funding at designated development milestones. APL will help define and manage the technical interface documents that link the fire-control, ground and interceptor constellation segments, so the government can make data-driven decisions.
“This is another great example of our ongoing strong partnership with APL and highlights the critical nature of University Affiliated Research Centers and Federally Funded Research and Development Centers to the success of these vital space programs,” said Col. Bryon McClain, acting portfolio acquisition executive for Space Combat Power.
The program office sits within Space Systems Command at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. Officials released no additional details, citing operational security requirements.
