A repurposed Earth satellite stalks a spent rocket from 27 kilometers

HEO's Continuum-1 turned a commercial imaging satellite into a close observer of a discarded Chinese rocket stage.

An Australian company has shown that a satellite built to photograph the ground can be turned into something closer to an inspector, shadowing another nation’s discarded rocket hardware for days at a time.

HEO said on Sept. 14 that its Continuum-1 spacecraft completed a second rendezvous and proximity operation campaign around a noncooperative Long March 2C rocket body. Between Aug. 30 and Sept. 4 the satellite drifted to within 27 kilometers of the spent stage and returned imagery at resolutions as fine as 7 centimeters per pixel. An earlier pass, held from Aug. 12 to Aug. 16, opened at roughly 40 kilometers and produced 8-centimeter imagery.

Most non-Earth imaging to date relies on flybys, brief encounters where geometry and sunlight decide what a camera can capture. Deliberate station-keeping changes that calculus, letting operators choose viewing angles, lighting and dwell time.

Satellogic supported mission operations and UNSW Canberra Space handled maneuver planning and ground tracking, with funding from Defence Trailblazer’s Advanced Innovation Fund.

The work sits in a deliberately ambiguous corner of space operations. The same rendezvous skills that enable inspection and servicing also underpin the close-approach tactics militaries are rehearsing, and the target here belonged to a foreign power.
