Getting better outcomes in space: how will the UK embrace the challenge?

The UK’s space sector is waking up to a hard truth: space is no longer a peaceful playground for science and commerce. It’s a contested domain, and the government knows it has to get its act together—fast.

Behind closed doors at London’s Space-Comm expo, government and industry leaders gathered for a frank, off-the-record chat about securing British assets in orbit. The consensus? Space is now squarely a national security and defense battleground.

Space Is Now a Warfighting Domain

One speaker made the point bluntly: space should not be treated differently from land, sea, or air. Satellite jamming is routine. Anti-satellite missiles are being tested. The UK’s interests in orbit are under direct threat, and the old mindset of space as a neutral commons is dead.

The panel agreed that protecting those assets requires a fundamental shift in thinking. The UK needs to treat space like any other military domain—with clear rules of engagement, deterrence strategies, and a willingness to fight back.

Bridging the Government-Industry Gap

A recurring theme was the need for better relationships between Whitehall and the commercial space sector. The UK government is being urged to embrace private equity, venture capital, and cutting-edge tech like edge computing. But bureaucratic inertia remains a major hurdle.

One speaker described the required change as a “cultural transformation.” The good news? The dynamics have shifted significantly in just the last two years. Industry and government are starting to speak the same language—but they’re not there yet.

Outcomes Over Ambition

The buzzword of the session was “outcomes.” Speakers stressed that the UK must define exactly what it wants to achieve in space, then laser-focus on those objectives. In a fragmented, geopolitical free-for-all, vague ambitions won’t cut it.

The war in Ukraine has been a brutal wake-up call, showing how space assets can decide the outcome of a conflict. Assured access to data is now a critical national security issue. The UK’s messaging is getting stronger, but the real test will be execution.

What This Means for the UK’s Space Future

The panel made one thing clear: urgency is finally sinking in. Relationships are improving, but the UK still has a long way to go to punch above its weight in orbit. A cultural shift is underway—and if it succeeds, Britain could become a serious player in the new era of space warfare. If it fails, its assets will remain vulnerable. The clock is ticking.
