GPS jamming wave pushes UK toward self-reliant satellite security
A surge in GPS jamming across Northern Europe is accelerating British plans to build sovereign satellite capability, with London committing £62 million ($83.4 million) to reduce dependence on foreign orbital infrastructure.
Space Minister Liz Lloyd unveiled the package during the Farnborough International Airshow on July 20. One stream concentrates on hardened satellite communications gear capable of maintaining links when adversaries jam or spoof radio signals. A second stream backs labs and startups working on countermeasures against cyber intrusions targeting orbital infrastructure.
Europe has endured a sustained escalation in GNSS interference since 2022. Conflict zones around Ukraine and the broader Middle East generate spoofed and jammed signals that drift into neighboring countries’ airspace. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency updated its guidance in July, noting that spoofing incidents now evade detection more effectively and can corrupt multiple onboard systems at once.
For the UK, the problem is immediate. Russian-aligned electronic warfare units have routinely disrupted GPS reception across the Baltic region, interfering with civilian flights and maritime traffic. Satellite ground stations supporting British military deployments have also drawn attention from state-linked cyber operators.
The investment plugs into a domestic space sector that has been gathering momentum. The UK Space Agency’s startup accelerator has already channeled more than £102 million into early-stage companies, and industry groups have pressed Parliament for sustained investment in space security infrastructure.
The push mirrors a wider NATO shift. The alliance recently linked military satellites from eight nations into a shared network and now treats space as a formal warfighting domain alongside land, sea, air, and cyber. London’s bet on orbital independence follows the same logic at the national level, aiming to keep British military and civilian satellite services operating when external systems come under pressure.
