Signals-hunting satellites work like ears in orbit. Where imaging spacecraft photograph the ground, these listen for electronic emissions from radars, radios and maritime gear, and a cluster of spacecraft can fix where a transmission originated.
That capability is shifting from experiment to routine. The National Reconnaissance Office said Aug. 17 it handed HawkEye 360 a contract under its Commercial Radio Frequency Capabilities Augmentation program, or CRFCA, to deliver this data to US intelligence and defense agencies as operational support.
The deal’s value was not disclosed. It closes out a review that began in 2022, when the NRO gave six companies study contracts to assess whether commercial RF collections could reinforce government systems. Modeling and simulation gave way to on-orbit demonstrations, and CRFCA now allows the agency to scale purchases as mission needs evolve.
HawkEye 360, public since May, flies more than 30 small satellites in low Earth orbit, usually in three-satellite groups that work together to locate signals. On an Aug. 13 earnings call it reported record international revenue of $21M in the second quarter, up 134% year over year and about 42% of the company’s $49.8M in quarterly sales.
Executives cite rising military demand for space-based signal location across Europe, the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific. CRFCA sits with the NRO’s Commercial Systems Program Office, which already folds commercial imaging and radar into the intelligence architecture.
The company wants faster turnarounds between collection and delivery. Its leadership is working toward roughly 10-minute revisit and latency within two to three years, weighing more satellites plus hosted payloads to get there.
