QOSMIC, an Indian space-tech startup building optical communication infrastructure for space, has secured $3.3 million in seed funding to accelerate the deployment of laser-based ground stations and satellite terminals that promise to bridge the growing gap between satellite data generation and terrestrial connectivity.
The Data Bottleneck in Orbit
The Bengaluru-based company is targeting what it calls the “data layer” of the space economy—the optical network that carries information between satellites, orbital data centers, and ground infrastructure. As satellite capabilities grow exponentially, the radio-frequency links currently used to downlink data have become a critical bottleneck.
Co-founder and CEO Shreyaans Jain framed the challenge in stark terms: “The next decade of the space economy will be defined by data. Satellites are becoming exponentially more capable, but the infrastructure connecting them to Earth has not kept pace.” He argued that optical communications will become as fundamental to space infrastructure as fiber optics became to the internet.
Laser Ground Stations as the Solution
QOSMIC’s technology replaces traditional radio-frequency links with laser-based optical ground stations that offer higher bandwidth, improved security, and significantly lower costs. The company’s approach addresses a core inefficiency noted by Accel partners Mahendran Balachandran and Pratik Agarwal: “Satellites are collecting more than they can ever send back to Earth, and most of what they see never makes it down. As computing moves into orbit, that gap only widens.”
The seed funding will enable QOSMIC to deliver operational optical ground stations and satellite terminals to international customers. The company also plans to scale its integration, testing, and manufacturing capabilities, while expanding engineering teams across optics, mechanical systems, and electronics.
