Latest White House cybersecurity strategy talks crypto, AI, quantum

White House cyber strategy missing space

The White House’s latest cyber strategy name-drops quantum, AI, and even crypto—but space, the domain where the US military is most vulnerable to a digital Pearl Harbor, gets ghosted. That omission has experts wondering if the administration just drew up battle plans for a war it forgot to include a front.

Six Pillars, No Launchpad

President Trump’s March cyber strategy rests on six policy pillars, from hardening critical infrastructure to dominating emerging tech. The critical infrastructure pillar covers the usual suspects—energy grids, financial systems, data centers—and explicitly calls for booting adversary vendors and products. The goal: deny initial access and bounce back fast when things go sideways.

Then there’s the pillar on sustaining superiority in critical and emerging technologies. It pledges to secure crypto and blockchain, push post-quantum cryptography, and lock down the AI stack from data centers to agentic tools that can “detect, divert, and deceive” attackers. The US also vows to call out foreign AI platforms that censor or surveil.

Notice what’s missing? “They mention cryptocurrency and quantum and AI but no space,” said Dr. Gregory Falco, an assistant professor at Cornell University. For a domain where satellites control everything from GPS to troop movements, that silence is deafening.

Offensive Shift, Blurred Lines

What did get attention is the strategy’s aggressive tone. It authorizes “the full suite of U.S. government defensive and offensive cyber operations” and warns the US “will not confine our responses to the ‘cyber’ realm.” Megan Moloney of Guidehouse Federal calls it a “notable offensive shift” that accelerates the blurring of domains—cyber, space, and special operations are now one fused battlespace.

Bob Gourley of OODA was struck by the same pivot: the strategy treats disruption as an offensive sport, not just defense. Lisa Donnan of The Donnan Group, meanwhile, flagged the talent pillar, noting 4.8 million global cybersecurity jobs sit unfilled. Collaboration between academia, industry, and government is critical, she said, especially when the workforce gap is a national security risk.

What This Means for Space

The real power of any strategy lies in execution, not prose. Lauryn Williams of CSIS points out that without implementation details—especially for space—we’re left guessing whether the White House will follow up with concrete plans. Space cybersecurity is notoriously hard: you can’t patch a satellite in orbit like you patch a server, and the threat surface is growing as constellations multiply.

The takeaway? This strategy sets the table for a fight that will span every domain at once. But if space remains an afterthought, the US risks building a cyber shield that leaves its most exposed frontier wide open. The next version needs to look up.
