Two United flights lose satellite navigation over Los Angeles

Two United crews reported degraded satellite navigation over Los Angeles within the same hour, and no cause has been established.

Satellite navigation over one of the busiest air corridors in the United States went soft early on September 25, and at least two airline crews noticed.

United Flight 1962, an Airbus A321neo outbound from Los Angeles International Airport, told controllers at 00:36 local time that its navigation was no longer reliable. United Flight 1866 raised the same concern 39 minutes later. What caused the disruption is unknown, and officials have not said how many other aircraft were affected.

Anything that reads satellite time or position is exposed once reception degrades, from surveillance gear to cockpit displays, the FAA warns. Jamming buries the real signal. Spoofing hands the receiver a counterfeit one, so the position or clock it reports is quietly wrong. Poor reception on its own cannot tell investigators which of the two happened.

Fallback capability is already mandatory. Rules for commercial instrument flying require a navigation path that does not depend on satellites, which in practice means an inertial platform, ground radio beacons, or both.

Crews are told to watch their equipment for anomalies, alert controllers quickly, and file a detailed report through the agency’s satellite anomaly system.

Attribution remains the hard part. Transmitters can be difficult to locate, and regulators have said they still lack the continuous spectrum monitoring that would show an attack while it unfolds.
