Unnamed defense customers reserve payload room on Dream Chaser’s first flight

The reusable Dream Chaser's maiden mission will mix defense, civil and commercial payloads, Sierra Space says.

After years of delays, Sierra Space’s Dream Chaser finally has customers for its first trip to orbit. The company said September 2 that national security, civil and commercial payloads will share the maiden flight, expected later this year, though it declined to name the buyers, reveal contract values or detail the hardware.

Chief executive Dan Jablonsky called the mission a new operating model in which one vehicle serves government, defense and commercial users at the same time. The reusable spaceplane launches vertically on a rocket and glides to a runway landing, a return style the company hopes will let customers fly experiments without full spacecraft-grade environmental qualification, saving time and money.

Dream Chaser began as a crew capsule concept and lost NASA’s 2014 commercial crew competition to Boeing and SpaceX. Its predecessor company won a station resupply contract in 2016, yet repeated schedule slips kept the winged vehicle grounded, and it has still never reached orbit. A reworked 2025 deal with NASA turned the debut into a free-flight demonstration in low Earth orbit for the first ship, Tenacity, rather than a cargo run to the station.

The booking push fits Sierra Space’s broader makeover into a defense-focused company chasing national security work, with Dream Chaser pitched as a reusable orbital test platform for military and civil experiments alike.
