Arctic island readies another week of spoofing attacks on satellite navigation

Norway's Jammertest returns to Andoya on September 14 for five days of deliberate jamming and spoofing aimed at the receivers the modern world runs on.

Jammertest, billed as the world’s largest open test of navigation resilience, opens its 2026 edition on September 14 at Bleik on the Norwegian island of Andoya, roughly 300 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle.

The event is run by Norwegian authorities, including the Public Roads Administration, the Communications Authority, the Defence Research Establishment and the Metrology Service. Organizers published this year’s test catalog and plan on GitHub, and for five days engineers will deliberately jam and spoof satellite navigation signals to see how receivers in aircraft, cars, drones, clocks and industrial gear respond.

Two failure modes worry researchers most. One is sustained jamming that erases GNSS for long enough to exhaust backup timing. The other is slow-burn spoofing, which feeds a receiver false position and time without tripping a fallback, quietly corrupting everything that leans on satellite timing. The audience is broad because GNSS supplies more than position: power grids, telecom networks, markets and transit all synchronize to its clock.

The 2024 edition flew a Norwegian rescue helicopter and a light aircraft piloted by a Eurocontrol aviator into the interference zone. Tracking displays showed the aircraft carving loops and sharp turns that were never flown. The US military runs comparable tests at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, but keeps the results tightly held. Norway’s version is deliberately open, with participants sharing findings on the final night. The organizers’ own website was compromised earlier this year, when attackers injected malicious JavaScript into its pages.
