New White House S&T strategy leans on space superiority

The White House's new science and technology strategy puts space superiority at the heart of national security competition.

The White House has mapped out how science and technology should serve national security, and space sits near the center of the plan.

The White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy published the strategy this week. The National Security Science and Technology Strategy builds on the 2025 National Security Strategy and is organized around four pillars.

Space appears throughout. The strategy claims the United States holds clear technological superiority in the space domain and calls for detecting, characterizing and countering threats to U.S. space interests from very low Earth orbit through cislunar space. It favors a mix of a few high-end platforms and larger numbers of cheaper, sometimes expendable systems, a structure meant to deliver capability while forcing competitors to overspend on defense. The strategy also warns against competing in ways adversaries can counter cheaply.

Regulatory reform and private capital feature heavily in the plan, alongside an appendix updating the Critical and Emerging Technologies list, which includes space technologies.

The strategy signals that the United States intends to treat the space domain as an active warfighting arena and to lean on commercial capacity as it does, a direction the Space Force has already embraced in its own acquisition moves.
